Bespoke Pieces / Commissions

The Commissioning Process:

Commissioning

You may desire a truly unique piece of jewellery. Something unlike anything else. It may be a bespoke version of an existing design from my collections or it may be an entirely new, one-of-a-kind piece. Commissioning is the magical process of collaboration between the designer/maker and client who work on an idea together and make it come to life.

To give you an idea of the process, here is a quick outline:

Time-Frame:

From first chat to completion it can take between 8-10 weeks. Please see the drop-down menu below for the individual stages and details.

Cost:

An accurate quote can only be provided once I have a clear understanding of your desired design. Material and making costs vary considerably from piece to piece, especially with more intricate designs, while simpler designs, such as classic wedding rings without gemstones are quicker to estimate.

Due to current fluctuations in metal prices, all quotes are valid for a very limited time frame.

Commissioning Process - A brief Outline:

Generally speaking, this involves the following but the length may depend on the complexity of the commission.

  • We’ll begin with an initial conversation to explore your ideas and specific requirements. I’ll ask plenty of questions, and of course, you are welcome to do the same. If you already have detailed ideas, that’s a wonderful starting point. If not, you might like to browse the designs on my website for inspiration, and we can take it from there.

If you are based in/near London, we can meet somewhere convenient to discuss your ideas in person. Otherwise, a phone call or Zoom meeting works just as well.

  • I will take all of the information you have shared on board and create some initial sketches for you to review and choose from.

  • Once you have chosen a design and all materials and sizes are confirmed, I can provide an accurate quote.

Before this stage, it is difficult to give a precise estimate, as time and material costs can vary significantly depending on the design. As mentioned above, this quote will be valid for a very limited period, given the current fluctuations in metal prices.

    1. If you are happy to proceed, I will ask for a 50% deposit at this stage and begin work on your piece.

    2. For wedding rings, I will first send a silver trial ring to confirm the correct size and reduce the likelihood of needing to resize it later.

    3. I will then create your piece, and any additional services, (such as engraving), will be completed at this stage.

    4. Once the work is finished, the piece will be sent to the London Assay Office for hallmarking, which is a legal requirement in the UK. Click here for more details.

    5. As a special token, I will also send you images documenting the entire making process.

  • Once everything is ready, I will request the remaining balance to be transferred.

  • Once payment is received, I will get in touch to confirm the delivery day and to ensure you are at home to receive it. I will post the piece by Royal Mail Next Day Special Delivery, which will arrive the following day before 1pm. The piece is insured and postage is free of charge. If you wish, you can also collect the piece from my workshop.

My Golden Rules:

Please consider the following if you consider commissioning me:

  • Am I the right person for you? Do you like my style and the pieces I create?

  • I will not replicate the designs of other jewellers or brands. It is not fair to them or me. If you would like to work with me, this should reflect an appreciation for my style and work.

  • To be fair and transparent, I only accept commissions that fall within my area of expertise. If a design requires techniques I do not specialise in, I will happily suggest fellow makers who may be able to assist you.

  • Materials: To uphold an ethical working practice, I use responsibly sourced materials, which may come at a modestly higher cost than conventional alternatives. These are:

    • Single Mine Origin Gold (SMO)

    • Recycled Silver

    • Ethically-sourced gemstones from a very select list of suppliers
